For many people who have diabetes, basic treatment may involve checking their blood sugar or medication.

Creating a personal care plan with your doctor is a great way to stay on top of your diabetes management, but here are a few beneficial screenings you should have.

Control del nivel de azúcar en sangre

A1c is a blood test that measures your blood sugar levels, or glucose, over the last few months. This test can find out if a person has diabetes or prediabetes. It can also see how well a person who has diabetes is controlling their blood sugar over the past two to three months. Regular A1c tests can help your doctor to know if your care plan needs to be adjusted.

Cuidado de los ojos

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common eye disease in people who have diabetes. It is also the leading cause of adult blindness in the U.S. If you have diabetes, be sure to have a dilated eye exam once a year. Regular eye exams can detect eye disease early, when it can still be treated, and alert your health care provider that your diabetes needs to be better controlled. Salud renal

Diabetic kidney disease, also called diabetic nephropathy, is kidney disease that occurs due to diabetes. “Nephropathy” is a medical term that simply means your kidneys aren’t working well. If you have diabetes, be sure to have your urine tested every year to check for a protein called albumin. Even a small amount of albumin in your urine is a sign of early kidney damage.
