Three Screenings to Have When You Have Diabetes
Managing diabetes is more than checking your blood sugar or taking medicine. Work with your doctor to make a care plan, and ask about these tests.
A1c Test
This blood test shows your average blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months. It helps your doctor see if your care plan is working or needs to change. Learn more about the A1c test.
Eye Exam
Diabetes can damage your eyes and cause vision loss. The most common eye problem is called diabetic retinopathy. Get a dilated eye exam once a year. Your eye doctor uses drops to see inside your eyes. This exam can find problems early, when they can still be treated.
Kidney Test
Diabetes can also damage your kidneys. This is called diabetic kidney disease. Get a urine test every year. It checks for protein in your urine, which can be an early sign of kidney damage.
Community Programs
Cupboards Project
The Cupboards Project is a growing network of self-serve mini-pantries that provide free healthy food and nutrition information to Maryland neighborhoods in need. Our mini-pantries work by a simple motto: “Take What You Need, Leave What You Can.”
Community Health Advocates (CHAs)
CHAs are your neighbors. They’re an active part of the communities they serve. You can find CHAs attending local outreach events throughout the year. These events are valuable opportunities for CHAs to provide health and community resources, free clothing, food and more.
